If I could go back in time and share with my 24-year-old self lessons and insights I’ve picked up in the 20 years since then — and know that Younger Me would heed the advice — here’s what I’d try to impart.

You can avoid marrying the wrong man if you stop seeing anyone you’re not WAHOO excited about. Don’t talk yourself into it. Don’t settle just because he’s the best you’ve dated up until that point. It doesn’t mean he’s the best you’ll ever date.

Don’t waste time fretting about the end of friendships or relationships where you were carrying all the weight of making sure the connection stayed vibrant. If you’re not getting reciprocal, equal effort — on the whole, since this can fluctuate moment to moment, depending on how replete or depleted someone is — they then don’t care enough.

Develop the hobbies that excite you. In fact, don’t pursue anything that doesn’t excite you, whether that’s jobs, hobbies, boyfriends, friends…Life is too short to waste time with mediocre feelings.
